Child Pornography Sweep by NJ Prosecutor Leads to Mass Arrests

A New Jersey county prosecutor’s program targeting online sexual exploitation of children has led to multiple arrests on child pornography and related charges since mid-2020.

Operation Safe Quarantine, begun by Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina in the early weeks of the pandemic, resulted in the arrests of 10 people last July on charges of possessing and distributing material depicting child sexual assault, among other crimes. A second round, Operation Safe Quarantine II, produced 17 arrests from August 2020 through January 2021. “This effort will continue to be a priority for BCPO and the agencies who partnered with us for this investigation,” Coffina said.

Those arrested in Operation Safe Quarantine are charged with an array of sex crimes, including:

  • Luring, which is enticing a person to a location to commit a crime
  • Attempted obscenity with a minor
  • Endangering the welfare of a child
  • Possessing child sexual abuse material
  • Sexual assault
  • Criminal sexual contact

If convicted, those arrested could face several years in prison and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines, depending on the degrees of their alleged crimes. Additionally, convictions for these crimes can require defendants to register as sex offenders under Megan’s Law for at least the next 15 years and possibly for life.
